Angkor Wat
One of
Southeast Asia’s most significant
archeological sites, Angkor had once been
the capital of the ancient Khmer
civilization. Including the area that is
forested, the Angkor Archeological Park
stretches more than four hundred square
kilometers. It houses the spectacular relics
of the Khmer Empire’s different capitals
going all the way back from as early as the
ninth to the fifteenth century.
Angkor boasts the famous Temple of Angkor
Wat and the Bayon Temple at Angkor Thom.
The
Bayon Temple has enumerable decorations in
sculpture. A campaign has been launched by
UNESCO to protect this symbolic site and its
environment.
Angkor Wat is truly spectacular place. Its
most magnificent features are its temple,
detailed carvings in bas relief situated in
extensive galleries, amazing history, and
the steep stairs. This temple was
rediscovered in the early 1800s and has
since played host to a continuous stream of
sightseers.
Many are so captivated by Angkor Wat that
there was a case in the 1950s when a foreign
lady was so enamored of the Angkor temples
that her last dying wish was for her ashes
to be scattered on the grounds of the
temple.
More and more people come to visit Angkor
Wat each year. The temples are often crowded
with large groups of tourists arriving in
big tour buses making up a typical day at
this site.
