Prambanan Temple
Just
20 minutes from Yogyakarta City, the
Prambanan temple is the most beautiful and
biggest Hindu temple in the country. A
spectacular Shivaite temple, the Prambanan
Temple gets its name from the village on
which it is located. Locals call it the Loro
Jongrang Temple, or more romantically, as
the “Temple of the Slender Virgin".
The Prambanan Temple has the reputation of
being Indonesia’s most beautiful and biggest
Hindu temple. Just 17 km east of Yogyakarta
City on the island of Java, the temple is
reputed to have been ordered in the middle
of the 9th century by King Balitung Maha
Sambu.
Its ramparts are decorated with a bas-relief
sculpture showcasing the immortal epic story
of the Ramayana. The temple contains 8
shrines, the three main ones of which are
dedicated to Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, the
visual manifestations of God in Hinduism.
Shiva’s main temple rises to a height
of
over a hundred feet and contains the
spectacular statue of Durga, the consort of
Shiva.
Prambanan Temple is actually a network of
temples or shrines. The largest one is the
one in honor of Shiva, the destroyer. Two
smaller temples on each side of Shiva’s
temple are the ones dedicated to the other
manifestations of Hindu gods, Brahma (the
creator), and Vishnu (the preserver).
